The National Retail Federation just released their 2011 Holiday Survey and once again gift cards have beat out all other options to remain the most wanted holiday gift. According to the survey, 80.2% of all holiday shoppers will purchase a gift card, up over 3% from 2010. It is estimated that consumers will spend on average $155.43 in gift cards with total spending reaching around $27.8 billion.
Consumers look to purchase gift cards not because of the convenience, but they like to allow the recipient to choose their own gift. It’s easier to allow someone to purchase something on their own, rather than picking something out that might not be desired.
Matthew Shay, NRF President and CEO said,
With discretionary gifts expected to be popular, many consumers will view gift cards as an ‘everyday value item,’ affording their loved ones the option of buying something they really want or need.
We recommend that consumers follow the Top 20 Most Popular Gift Cards list that we released when choosing what gift card to buy this holiday season. These types of gift cards were determined to be the most popular by the NRF survey.
Most Popular Gift Cards
Data collected from 2011 NRF Survey.
The trends found in this survey actually match the same data that was released by GiftCardRescue.com in the top 20 most popular gift cards list. In the top 20 list, Walmart, Amazon.com and Target were the most desired gift cards and these merchants are each considered department stores. The only variation found between the two surveys were the popularity of restaurant gift cards in the NRF survey, where as in the GCR survey only two restaurant gift cards made it into the top 20.
As a gift card exchange retailer, we see a massive spike in restaurant gift cards that are sold for cash or Amazon.com credit immediately after Christmas. It appears that while consumers have the mindset that restaurant gift cards are desired, in actuality people prefer the department store and specialty merchants more.
Gift card popularity continued growing in the United States in 2011. As the holidays approach, we all consider gift cards as a means of festive exchange. There are however, concerns with gift card giving. The government says 95 percent of Americans either purchase or receive them.
Consumers have many questions regarding the fine print of these cards. The Credit CARD Act of 2009 guarantees:
Expiration: Gift cards are not able to expire within 5 years of issue. Still about $5 billion a year goes unused on gift cards. Beginning in January of this past year, the expiration date and any included fees are required to be printed on the back of each card. When your card expires
Dormancy Fees: Beware. If you fail to use your gift card for an entire year, you may be penalized with dormancy fees. These fees usually range from $2-2.50 a month following the inactive period.
Exceptions to this Act:
- Prepaid Cards – long distance, wireless telephone, internet access
- Reloadable Cards – not marketed or labeled as gift cards
- Loyalty, Reward, Promotional Cards

What do you look for when choosing a company to sell gift cards in bulk to?
There are several factors that we think are important, and determined how we structured our system.
- Communication- When dealing with large amounts of gift cards (ie. Money) the most important thing is to have constant communication between you and your purchaser. After all, who wants to put 50k worth of gift cards in the mail, and not be able to hear from a human being if they have arrived? Or be able to check in with a rep to see what part of the process your cards are in?
- Or if there were any problems? At GiftCardRescue, you will always have a person to call that works directly in the processing center you send your cards to.
- Competitive Pricing- We know what our competitors pay, and we know we beat them in many, many cases. We also are willing to work with our suppliers who are consistently sending in cards, and have low fraud occurrences to give them a couple extra points here and there.
- Fast payments- At GiftCardRescue, we have the fastest payments in the industry for our bulk suppliers. For example, if your cards arrive on a Monday, your money will hit your account on Thursday via ACH.
- Dedicated Sales Reps- Every bulk supplier at GiftCardRescue has a dedicated account representative to answer any questions or concerns you may have at any point throughout the process.

Recently, RedStarWorldWear.com launched a conflictual marketing stunt, where the company sends “Free $500 Gift Cards” to consumers via snail mail. The catch is a 9% of sale shipping and handling fee which tags along. Consumers are responding with mixed feedback regarding this ploy along with some confusion.
Is this card too good to be true? What REAL benefit does it hold? Should I toss it? We’ve analyzed the pros and cons, based on consumer feedback, in order to assist your decision on how you might use this Red Star gift card.
Public response has shown that many consider the potentially decisive means of advertising this shipping cost is a characteristic of poor business morality.
Others are quick to point out a more complex scheme. Customers have stated that the merchandise is of poor quality and inflated prices which in turn may result in shipping and handling fees costing the consumer more in the long run.
It is important to note that the cards following the initial launch carried print stating “Free Gift Card” but the company has since removed these words from their mail-outs.
Many others report that they have used the card and the site without problem or concern. A number of individuals actually, business owners included, rebutted to these SCAM cries saying that this is simply clever marketing. Not only did it stir viral conversation, but many consumers are actually content with the 9% charge.
Feedback seems to be based on discrete review. Basically, those who enjoyed the product, enjoyed the promotion.
Today we are happy to release our fourth annual list of the Top 20 Most Wanted Gift Cards for 2011. Wal-Mart gift cards remain unchanged as the most popular gift card, followed by Amazon.com and Target. Consumers love the ease of use and extensive product selection that is available from these merchants.
Some of the biggest changes for this year’s list compared to the Top 20 Gift Cards for 2010 are; Kohl’s entered the top 20 for the first time, demand decreased for gas gift cards, and McDonald’s made its debut in the top 10. The list serves as an excellent resource for those looking to buy a gift card this holiday season, but are unsure of what merchant to purchase.
The data for top 20 gift cards was compiled by using over 12,000 gift card wish lists that were created by GiftCardRescue.com customers. GiftCardRescue.com users create wish lists of merchant gift cards they would like to purchase and are sent email alerts when a card they want becomes available at a discount. GiftCardRescue.com is the leading website for gift card exchange where consumers purchased over $4 million worth of discount gift cards in 2011 and saved an average of 15% to merchants like Best Buy, Home Depot, JC Penney and Macy’s.
It does not matter if you are planning on giving gift cards for a wedding, a birthday or a graduation, these gift card holders should also included in the things that you have to consider. This will make your present more presentable and more unique. Here is an easy explanation oh gift card holders-why they are nice.
Reasons Why Gift Card Holders are Nice
This gift card holder by Basicgrey is very creative
- It will help you put more personal touch to your gift even though what you are giving are just gift cards. It will show the receiver of the gift card that you were able to think of something to make the present unique and special for them. The only reason why some people think that giving gift cards are very impersonal is because the way it was presented is not that impressive.
- You can still incorporate the element of surprise on your gift. Most people want to be surprised when receiving gifts from other people. Take for example, giving out a Camcorder to someone. Even though there is already a box for the camcorder, you would still want to wrap it in a beautiful wrapper to thrill the person receiving the gift. That goes with gift cards as well. Though the gift card is already personalized, it would still be better if you get a gift card holder to make it more personal and attractive.
When you choose a gift card holder, it is essential that you choose something that it is associated and would fit the occasion. Due to the fact that gift card holders are common nowadays, there are many ways for you to look for the packaging for your gift card that fits the occasion. You can also opt to make your own gift card holder and customize it yourself so you can maintain the element of surprise.
If you are not that creative, you can seek help from a friend or a family member so you can still include yourself in the process. You just have to give your best to make sure that the person who will receive it will have a smile on his or her face after receiving the gift from you. This will assure you that your gift will be remembered and treasured for life.
Gift cards are going to be one of the most popular items this holiday season, make sure you check out Free Gift Card Week where you can find a gift card for them and a bonus for you!
